Woman arrested in death of 2-year-old who ate chili powder

An Apple Valley woman was arrested Monday for her alleged role in the death of a 2-year-old girl who died after eating chili powder, police said.

Authorities responded to a call of a child suffering from a seizure in the 20000 block of Cayuga Road Sunday afternoon and took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, said San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials in a statement.

Amanda Sorensen, 21, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death and booked into the West Valley Detention Center. She was being held on $500,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death and an autopsy is pending, police said.
