Teemu Selanne is 40 years old, skating as if he were 20, and climbing the NHL stats ladder. ‘The fun and the passion brought me back,’ he said of returning to the game after winning the Stanley Cup in 2007.
Listen to the video above to hear what he has to say after collecting his 22nd career hat trick (three goals in one game for non-hockey fans out there) Monday night against the Colorado Avalanche.
It’s no wonder Ducks fans at Honda Center began chanting to Selanne: ‘One more year, one more year.’ Selanne remains noncommittal, though he admits he is having fun.
Selanne’s 75 points this season are the third-most in NHL history among players age 40 and older:
Player Team Year Points Age
Gordie Howe Detroit 1968-69 103 40 years, 276 days
Johnny Bucyk Boston 1975-76 83 40 years, 234 days
Teemu Selanne Anaheim 2010-11 75 40 years, 181 days
*Note: Age is determined based on Jan. 1 of given season
