CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : OAKLAND : Fireworks Blamed in Warehouse Blaze

Fireworks were blamed for a blaze that raged through a roofing-supplies warehouse, threatening a huge propane tank and forcing the evacuation of nearby homes. Surrounding streets were closed to traffic late Thursday as crews battled the fire at the State Shingle Co. Residents of about a dozen houses in the mostly industrial area were evacuated as heavy black smoke enveloped their neighborhood. The fire was reported about 10:30 p.m. and was brought under control shortly before midnight, officials said.
