Members of Orange County’s team wave, top, at Sunday’s closing ceremonies of 16th annual Navasartian Olympic Games at Glendale High School. Shant Kalanjian, above, warms up before his Fresno band performs during the three-day games sponsored by the Western U. S. Region of Homenetmen, the Armenian youth and scouting organization. Right, Mari Abdulian wins women’s 50-yard breast stroke; Vatsche Shirikjian is congratulated after finishing second in the men’s event and soccer goalie Edwin Ovasapyan watches game-winning point. Other sports included basketball, volleyball, tennis, track and field, and table tennis. About 7,000 people watched the games, which drew about 1,800 athletes, including 600 from the Glendale chapter. Games are named for Navasart, the two-millennium-old Armenian summer new year festival where princes and knights showed off their strength.
