Slaying Suspect Prince

This is an open letter of appreciation to the newspapers and television stations in San Diego County.
Several weeks ago, before murder defendant Cleophus Prince was returned to San Diego, and thus before law enforcement had the opportunity to conduct a live line-up for witnesses, the San Diego Police Department and my office requested that his face not be published in newspaper photographs or shown on TV.
Although the extradition process took longer than we expected, that request was honored without exception.
Many people, myself included, have been critical when, in their view, the press has acted in a less than responsible fashion. It is important for the public to know when the news media have acted in a highly responsible fashion, showing restraint and thus protecting the rights of both the people and the defendant.
EDWIN L. MILLER, District Attorney
