Nation IN BRIEF : WYOMING : ‘Let-It-Burn’ Policy on Fires Proposed

Officials are proposing a partial return to Yellowstone National Park’s “let-it-burn” fire policy. The proposal calls for some natural fires to burn untended, for some to be fought and for the use of man-made fires as a prevention measure. An uproar over handling of devastating fires in 1988 resulted in suspension of the “let-it-burn” policy, which called for natural fires that did not threaten man or structures to burn untended. Since then, all fires, regardless of their source, have been fought. Until a final plan is adopted, the park will continue to fight all fires.
