A Salute to 2 Generous Millionaires
Hurrah for Joan Irvine Smith and her mother, Athalie R. Clarke! Your June 19 front-page story by Michael Flagg (“Irvine Co. Heirs Are Finally Paid Quarter-Billion”) reported that these super ladies finally settled their claim with the Irvine Co. for a quarter-billion dollars.
I am impressed, not only with the amount (it certainly beats a quarter-pounder), but the significant fact that these generous ladies intend to give a considerable amount to a variety of philanthropic causes.
Joan Smith’s commitment (from her half of the settlement) of an estimated $30 million could not come at a better time for Orange Countians.
Who can argue with cleaner air and water, preservation of the environment and support for higher education and research?
