The South African government admitted that an additional $600,000 in secret funds were channeled to rallies of the Inkatha Freedom Party, chief rival of Nelson Mandela’s African National Congress. The party, led by Zulu chief Mangosuthu Gatsha Buthelezi, reportedly received the money over a six-year period in the 1980s. The latest disclosure came two days after officials acknowledged that several thousand dollars in government funding had gone to Inkatha.
