Virginia Uribe, counselor at Fairfax High, was recognized by the Los Angeles Unified School District for starting Project 10, an educational and counseling project for gay and lesbian students. Uribe, who was honored earlier this year by the National Educational Assn., told Nuestro Tiempo: “Our program seeks to keep kids in school by giving them reinforcement and support . . . to make them feel like they are OK kids.”
