Eating to Win

What do two veterans eat and drink before working out?
Kathy Smith, creator of “Kathy Smith’s Step Workout” and 10 other exercise videos:
“It depends on the time of day. Before a morning workout, I usually have a seven-grain cereal with fruit or a seven-grain pancake and barley or oatmeal and a cup of hot tea. I usually eat an hour before.
“I take along a bottle of Evian water. I go through at least a quart during a one-hour workout. I try to eat something within 30 minutes after the workout--usually fruit. It helps you recover faster. Within two hours of a workout, I eat a good carbohydrate meal.”
Gary Grant, Los Angeles Clippers forward:
“In the morning, I will eat pancakes and fruit, usually between about 10 a.m. and noon. For lunch, usually between 2 and 4 p.m., I will have pasta. That will carry me through until the game is over. After the game, I will eat another type of pasta and a salad.”
