City Manager Bussey Announces Retirement

Rancho Palos Verdes City Manager Paul Bussey announced Thursday that he plans to retire after working more than 40 years in five cities.

Bussey, 62, said plans to do “what all retired people” do: travel, read and garden.

“I may even do some teaching,” Bussey added, “But I have no plans to take another full-time job in local government.”

The former Peace Corps member’s tenure in the tony hilltop city began more than seven years ago when the city was struggling with financial problems. Bussey said he sought to turn the city around and cited several proposed developments in the area, including the Ocean Trails golf course and residential development that is finally moving forward.

Bussey began his public service career in 1957 in the engineering department of San Diego County’s National City. Over the years he has served as a city manager in Carlsbad, Loma Linda and La Palma. He also worked as an assistant city manager in El Cajon.

“City government is a great career for someone,” Bussey said. “There are lots of personal rewards and I’ve really enjoyed the time I’ve spent in city management.”
