Leslie’s Match Ends With Trip to Hospital

Corona del Mar sophomore Caylan Leslie, maybe the county’s best player during the regular season, was forced to retire during her league semifinal match against teammate Nadia Vaughan Thursday at Balboa Bay Racquet Club. It was a “scary ending” to her individual season.
Leslie, who went 24-0 in singles during the Sea View League season, had a sore throat and was advised not to play by her father. But Leslie, the tournament’s top-seeded player, took the court against the fourth-seeded Vaughan so she could qualify for the section individual tournament.
After losing the first set, 6-4, Leslie trailed, 3-2, in the second set when she fell down and her coach, Tim Mang, called off the match.
She was rushed to Hoag Hospital in an ambulance. She was treated for dehydration and a viral infection and released.
“It’s unfortunate,” Leslie said. “I had a pretty good season. It’s too bad it had to end with me going to the hospital.”
Nadia Vaughan wound up losing to her sister, Nina, in the finals, 6-0, 6-2, but the two Vaughans will both qualify for the individual sectionals. Nina had earlier upset second-seeded Woodbridge freshman Susanna Lingman, 4-6, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals.
