2 Plead Not Guilty in Deputy’s Slaying

Two men accused of killing a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy during a robbery pleaded not guilty Friday in Orange County Municipal Court to murder charges that could bring them the death penalty.
Kevin Boyce, 27, and Andre Willis, 30, entered their pleas through their attorneys. The two were arraigned shortly after the Aug. 14 shooting but postponed entering pleas until Friday.
Commissioner Michael A. Leversen scheduled a Feb. 20 preliminary hearing to determine if they should stand trial and imposed a temporary gag order barring the parties from discussing the case outside the courtroom.
The two men are accused of shooting Deputy Shayne Daniel York in the back of the head during a robbery as he and his fiancee waited for haircuts at a Buena Park salon. The fiancee, Jennifer Parish, also a sheriff’s deputy, was not injured.
