BRUSSELS — The Belgian army said Saturday that it has completed the destruction of its antipersonnel land mines in keeping with a government ban on the weapons.
The final 45 tons of mines were destroyed Friday, the army said. A few thousand mines were kept to help train soldiers in mine clearance.
Belgium has been a vocal backer of efforts to secure a worldwide ban on land mines. It is set to be among the roughly 100 nations who are expected to sign a ban on antipersonnel mines Dec. 3 in Ottawa.
