A Hair-Raising Ring Story and a ‘Twist’

It’s another big sweeps weekend filled with original cable and network movies.

Ving Rhames stars as the notorious, high-haired boxing manager in the HBO movie “Don King: Only in America,” Saturday at 8 p.m. The bio-pic, which traces King’s beginnings in Cleveland to his rise outside the ring, is based on a book by investigative journalist Jack Newfield.

Richard Dreyfuss stars as the scoundrel Fagin in Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist,” premiering on ABC’s “The Wonderful World of Disney,” Sunday at 7 p.m. on Channel 7. Elijah Wood and Alex Trench also star.

Vanessa Redgrave, Nastassja Kinski and Jennifer Tilly are quite literally married to the mob in CBS’ four-hour thriller “Bella Mafia,” Sunday at 9 p.m. on Channel 2. The drama, adapted by Lynda La Plante from her novel, concludes Tuesday at 9 p.m.

Gail O’Grady, John Glover, Lori Loughlin and Vince Spano star in ABC’s “Medusa’s Child,” Sunday at 9 p.m. on Channel 7. The four-hour chiller, based on John Nance’s bestseller, deals with a nuclear bomb on board a cargo flight. The conclusion airs next Thursday at 9 p.m.

Today

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” at 8 p.m. on Channel 13, cordially invites fans to witness the first “Star Trek” character nuptials: Worf (Michael Dorn) and Dax (Terry Farrell) are set to walk down the aisle.

Barbara Bain resurrects her Emmy Award-winning “Mission: Impossible” character of Cinnamon Carter for the first time in 28 years on CBS’ “Diagnosis Murder,” at 9 p.m. on Channel 2.

After being canceled by NBC last season, “Unsolved Mysteries” pops up on CBS with the first of six specials, at 10 p.m. on Channel 2. Robert Stack returns as host.

Friday

The CBS special “Kids Say the Darndest Things,” at 8 p.m. on Channel 2, features host Bill Cosby asking children their feelings on school, sports, dating and home life.

Barbara Walters chats with Barbra Streisand and fiance James Brolin on ABC’s “20/20,” at 10 p.m. on Channel 7.

Saturday

Sela Ward and David Hyde Pierce host “The 19th Annual CableACE Awards,” at 6 and 11 p.m. on TNT. The event, telecast from the Wiltern Theatre, honors the best in cable programming for the past year. The sarcastic, cynical comic Denis Leary rants on HBO’s “Denis Leary: Lock ‘n Load,” at 10 p.m.

Sunday

E! Entertainment Television looks at the life and tragic death of game-show host-comedian Ray Combs on “Ray Combs: The E! True Hollywood Story,” at 8 p.m.

Richard Belzer plays his “Homicide: Life on the Street” character of Detective Munch on Fox’s “The X-Files,” Sunday at 9 p.m. on Channel 11.
