ReLeaf Costa Mesa is nearing the halfway point of its goal to plant 2,000 trees by 2000.
After forming just a few years ago, members expect to plant their 1,000th tree Nov. 22 at Smallwood Park. Fifty trees will be added to the park that day.
Spokeswoman Kris Hagen is optimistic the group will plant its 2,000th tree by the turn of the century.
“We’re going to stick to it,” she said. “We have a strong enough group, even though it’s small. I think it’s going to happen.”
Volunteers are needed to help with the planting, which also will feature home gardening tips from arborist Tom Larson.
The event begins at 9 a.m. at the park, on Corsica Place. Participants should bring work clothing and gloves.
If it rains, ReLeaf will delay the event until Feb. 21.
