GARDEN GROVE — Pacifica, assured of a playoff spot after Garden Grove’s loss Thursday night, showed the rest of Division VIII that it will be a team to be reckoned with in the playoffs.
The Mariners, who finished third in the Garden Grove League, pounded Bolsa Grande, 54-14, Friday night at Bolsa Grande High.
Pacifica (6-2-2, 4-2) sacked Matador quarterback Doug Baughman nine times, intercepted one of his passes, recovered two fumbles, held Bolsa Grande to minus-12 yards rushing and 108 yards in total offense.
Pacifica linebacker Ramez Ammari led the defense with four sacks and numerous tackles. He even had a one-yard run for a touchdown.
“It felt great,” Ammari said. “If it wasn’t for our defensive line opening it up, it wouldn’t have happened. I have to give all the credit to the defensive line.”
The Mariner offense scored on its first eight possessions, five of which started in Bolsa Grande territory.
Pacifica led, 28-0, at halftime, and was leading, 48-0, before Bolsa Grande scored early in the fourth quarter.
Mariner quarterback Brent Kirkland threw three touchdown passes, two to wide receiver Eric Ruegger. Ruegger had five receptions for 99 yards.
Bolsa Grande (3-7, 1-5) scored in the fourth quarter. Baughman threw two touchdowns, one to receiver Tam Huynh from five yards and the other a one-yard pass to tight end Jorge Pagaoga. Pagaoga had five catches for 75 yards.
