BUENA PARK — Senior night for Buena Park turned into the Brian McDonald and Jabari Phillips show as the Coyotes came back and beat Sonora, 20-12, Friday at Buena Park High.
McDonald had 17 carries for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Phillips sacked Sonora quarterback Clint Patton four times to lead the Coyotes (5-5, 4-1), who wrapped up second place in the Freeway League.
Patton passed for 161 yards and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Raiders (4-6, 2-3).
Sonora scored on its opening possession when running back Mark Pascual ran for an 18-yard touchdown. The extra-point was blocked.
The Raiders increased their lead to 12-0 when Patton scored on a one-yard run. Sonora tried for two points, but Patton’s pass failed.
From then on it was all Buena Park, which was honoring the team’s seniors at its final home game of the season.
Immediately following a punt by Sonora, McDonald scored from 45 yards on a sweep to make it 12-6.
On the Coyotes’ next possession, McDonald scored on an 87-yard run after cutting past four defenders.
“I tried to take it outside, but everyone was outside, so I cut inside,” McDonald said.
McDonald added a 10-yard touchdown in the third quarter to end the scoring.
