Council Approves Plans for Giant Retail Store

The San Gabriel City Council has approved plans for a large retail store proposed by developers who had a project at the same address rejected a year ago.
The design for the San Gabriel Discount Superstore calls for a 108,000-square-foot retail store and supermarket to be built at 1635 S. San Gabriel Blvd., the former site of a Target store.
Developers Hieu Tran and Julio Macedo hope to open the complex in March.
The newly designed complex is different than the two submitted a year ago.
Originally, Tran and Macedo had proposed to build Shun Fat Plaza, with 30 small stores, 11 restaurants and an Asian supermarket.
According to Mayor Dominic Polimeni, the original plan was turned down based on an environmental impact report.
“The report concluded that the proposed building would cause a lot of traffic and sewage problems for the city.”
