Council Will Weigh Water Rate Increase

The City Council on Monday will review local water rates, including whether an increase is needed.
City staff members are recommending a 4% increase on the consumption charge, or from $1.03 to $1.07 per 1,000 gallons.
Under the proposal, the average household or small business that uses a moderate amount of water would pay 60 cents more a month. The proposed rate increase would raise $200,000 in new revenue.
Staff members are not recommending an increase in the base rate.
The rate increase would go into effect in January if approved. It is proposed to cover expected cost increases by next July, said Greg Beaubien, finance director.
Beaubien said a major cost is tied to loan payments next year on two new wells, with one well already in operation. The second will be completed in January.
The meeting begins at 5 p.m. in the conference room at the Civic Center, 6650 Beach Blvd. Information: (714) 562-3754.
