HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Belmont High boys’ cross-country team continued its dominance of the City Section, placing five runners in the first eight places of the City Section championships at Pierce College.
It was the Sentinels’ 13th section title in 16 years.
Sophomore Humberto Vargas and senior Jorge Lopez placed first and second, in 15:21 and 15:24, respectively. Henry Briseno was fifth in 15:36, followed by Cristobal Martinez in 15:42 with Alejandro Lemus in 15:46.
In the girls’ race, Birmingham won its second championship in three years as Erika Dolezal finished seventh in 18:52, Dina Melendez ninth in 18:57, Tiffany Burgess 10th in 19:08, Melanie Sims 20th in 20:10 and Melissa Astete 22nd in 20:14 for 50 points.
North Hollywood freshman Natalie Stein won the race in 18:12.
