Cal Lutheran Bows Out in Quarterfinals, 2-1

Oskar Kantoft scored his 13th goal of the year, but Cal Lutheran’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Mary Washington of Virginia in the NCAA Division III men’s soccer quarterfinals Saturday at Mt. Clef Stadium at Cal Lutheran.
Kantoft, a sophomore forward from Malmo, Sweden, scored after taking a cross from midfielder Scott Porter in the 69th minute to tie the game, 1-1.
The decisive goal came in the 84th minute, when Mary Washington’s Kevin Linton scored after a indirect free kick by Les Currier.
Cal Lutheran (16-3-3) outshot Mary Washington (21-2-1), 9-7, but the Kingsmen trailed, 1-0, after Jeremy Corazzini scored his first goal of the season on a direct free kick from 20 yards in the 22nd minute.
Cal Lutheran had its 18-game unbeaten streak snapped.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Canyons 75, Pasadena 61--Gohar Tumanian and Laura Tweedy each scored 14 points, and the Cougars (4-0) won the Long Beach City College tournament.
Zevette Mitchell, most valuable player in the tournament, added 13 points and 16 rebounds. Narineh Hartoonian contributed 10 points and nine assists, while Bobbie Mullins scored 10 points.
Cal State Northridge 75, Loyola Marymount 63--Tannea Nelson had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Edniesha Curry added 15 points and seven assists for the Matadors (1-1) at Northridge.
The 75 points marked a high for the Matadors in two seasons under Coach Gary Abraham.
Vermont 64, Pepperdine 56--Karalyn Church had 23 points and eight rebounds and the Catamounts (4-0) won their own tournament at Burlington, Vt.
Angie White scored 16 points for Pepperdine (1-1), while Jodi Sackville added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Northwest Nazarene 96, Cal Lutheran 73--Missy Rider had 18 points and seven rebounds to make the all-tournament team, but the Regals (0-2) lost in the Albertson (Idaho) tournament.
Monica Flores had 11 points and six assists for Cal Lutheran, and Katie Placido also scored 11.
Staci Kirk was named all-tournament for Northwest Nazarene (2-2) after collecting 16 points and 10 rebounds. Lisa Sorenson had 18 points.
Albertson downed Pacific Lutheran, 73-50, in the second game.
WATER POLO
Pepperdine 7, Long Beach State 6--Andy Bruninga scored three consecutive goals and the top-ranked Waves (21-1) broke away from a 4-4 tie at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.
Alan Herman scored two goals for Pepperdine, while Jack Kocur and Christian Jensen each scored one.
WRESTLING
Southern California Regional Championships--Moorpark College won the team title and qualified a wrestler for the state championships from all 10 weight classes at Cypress College.
The Raiders finished with 165 1/2 points, 27 more than runner-up Palomar.
Juan Roman (126 pounds), Jessie Campos (142), Gabe Roman (158), Ati Conner (167) and Chuck Sandlin (177) of the Raiders had a combined record of 16-0, each winning his division.
Scott Erickson placed second in the 150-pound class, winning two of three matches, and 118-pounder Ernie Nunez finished third, winning three of four matches.
The state tournament is Dec. 5-6 at West Valley College in Saratoga.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Antelope Valley 84, Canyons 70--John Burrell had 24 points for the Marauders (3-1) at Canyons.
Woodley Polynice had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (1-1).
