School Officials to Meet on Boundary Changes

Supt. Reed Montgomery will meet with administrators in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District on Monday to discuss changing the boundaries between the two school districts.

Laguna Beach school officials are scheduled to accept 342 new students in already crowded, aging schools because of approved development at Newport Coast. If the boundary lines are shifted, the new homes would sit in the Newport-Mesa district.

But Mac Bernd, the school superintendent in Newport-Mesa, said he does not know whether his school district could accommodate the growing enrollments. A final decision is not expected Monday, Montgomery said.

Laguna Beach school officials also are considering expanding El Morro Elementary School, where almost half the new students would enroll. Many parents, who flooded a school board meeting Tuesday, oppose expansion plans.
