City Council Withdraws Buyout Offer to Manager

The City Council voted Tuesday night to withdraw its proposal to pay $267,500 to City Manager Ken Landau to terminate his contract.

Landau, who is being investigated by the district attorney’s office for allegedly inflating travel expenses and hiring a private detective to follow city officials, was put on paid administrative leave in late October while the terms of his dismissal were worked out.

The council had initially offered Landau a $267,500 buyout.

Landau countered with a higher amount, which was discussed in closed session Tuesday night and rejected, Mayor Don Dear said.

Landau remains on paid administrative leave while the district attorney’s investigation continues. The City Council said it would consider the buyout terms again, no later than March 10.

“If the district attorney indicts him [Landau], we might be predisposed to fire him,” Dear said.
