20 Injured in Pileup Near San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. — About 20 people were injured Wednesday in a massive chain-reaction pileup on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
The accident, involving 40 to 45 cars, began at about 3:30 p.m. with a three-car accident on southbound Interstate 680. That reportedly led to three or four separate accidents as vehicles began skidding on the rain-soaked highway a few blocks from downtown San Jose.
There were no fatalities, the San Jose Fire Department said. Of those hurt, 10 were taken to four hospitals with minor or moderate injuries, mostly back and neck problems.
Those who were not hurt were taken to a city park just off the highway, where they were given cellular phones to call relatives to pick them up.
