Danny Manning scored his 10,000th career point and the Phoenix Suns made all 25 of their free throws as they avoided a second-half collapse to beat the New Jersey Nets, 111-99, Wednesday night at Phoenix.
Antonio McDyess paced six Sun players in double figures with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
New Jersey, which had won five of its previous six, was paced by Sam Cassell’s 24 points--all in the second half.
Atlanta 109 Toronto 104--The Hawks tied an NBA record with their 11th consecutive overtime victory and sent the Raptors to their 11th loss in a row with the double-overtime victory at Toronto.
Atlanta’s streak, which dates to the 1994-95 season, matches the 11 consecutive overtime victories by the San Antonio Spurs from Nov. 13, 1979, to Feb. 8, 1983.
Miami 84, Orlando 60--The Heat snapped the NBA’s longest winning streak for the second night in a row, beating the Magic at Orlando to take over sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division.
The Heat, who ended the Lakers’ season-opening, 11-game streak Tuesday night, played the same kind of suffocating defense to stop Orlando’s stretch of success at six wins in a row.
Nick Anderson’s three-point basket with 1:50 remaining ensured Orlando wouldn’t set an NBA record for fewest points in a game.
Cleveland 95, Philadelphia 89--Shawn Kemp and Wesley Person scored 18 points apiece as the Cavaliers used their inside advantage to defeat the 76ers at Philadelphia.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Person added nine rebounds and Kemp had eight boards for Cleveland, which has defeated the 76ers 11 times in a row and 24 out of the last 25.
Milwaukee 101, Vancouver 82--Glenn Robinson scored 25 points and Terrell Brandon had 14, including 12 during the decisive third quarter, as the Bucks handed the Grizzlies their seventh loss in eight road games.
Portland 96, Minnesota 90--Rookie Alvin Williams scored eight of his 12 points in the fourth quarter as the Trail Blazers held off the Timberwolves at Minneapolis to improve to 7-2 on the road.
Tom Gugliotta scored 18 points for the Timberwolves, who lost their fourth in a row.
Washington 98, San Antonio 94--Rod Strickland had 23 points and 17 assists and Juwan Howard scored 25 points as the Wizards ended a six-game losing streak by holding off the Spurs at San Antonio. David Robinson paced San Antonio with 34 points and Tim Duncan had 18 points and 14 rebounds.
