Edison Plant

Since when is an elected official’s economic concern more important than his regard for public safety? Redondo Beach Mayor Greg Hill in the article “Chance to Get Rid of a Pig in a Parlor” (Nov. 23) states that by getting rid of the Edison power plant every one wins and nobody loses. Not true.
If the city is successful in revoking the plant’s must-run status and then ridding itself of the plant, the city could be setting up a scenario in which the Los Angeles basin suffers a disastrous electrical blackout. The mayor is oversimplifying the matter when he thinks the plant’s output of over 1,000 megawatts would not be missed. This is especially true on those hot summer days when the electrical system demand requires every available generation source in the basin to sustain the load.
