Gonzalez Lifts Katella to Victory in Ninth Inning

Hugo Gonzalez singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give Katella a come-from-behind victory Saturday afternoon in the first round of the West Anaheim Lions baseball tournament.
Sophomore pitcher John Lorenzen went the distance to improve his record to 2-0 and Mike Martinez hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot in the first inning.
In the Fountain Valley softball tournament:
Mater Dei 8, Lakewood St. Joseph’s 0--Ruby Rojas and Kelsey Kollen each had four hits to lead the Monarchs (10-2) to a first-round victory.
In the Michelle Carew softball classic:
Orange Lutheran 5, Katella 1--Laura Miklos threw a no-hitter to lead the Lancers to a consolation-round victory. Jessica Edwards had a double and an RBI for Orange Lutheran (7-3).
At the Sonora Diving Invitational:
Edison’s Williams shines--Brian Williams of Edison placed first in the 11-dive one- and three-meter springboard event with a score of 393. John Cogorno of Edison finished third at 335.55 and teammate Rye Davis (325.75) was fourth. Williams finished second in the six-dive result competition with a score of 227.60. Max Bookman of the Trojan Dive Club (233.50) finished first.
In the girls’ events, Kari Welch of Esperanza won the six-dive result competition with a score of 195.65, while Fountain Valley’s Brianna Linnbert (155.70) and Yvonne Tao 151.45) were second and third. In the 11-dive event, Katie Kanavas (392.60) of Dana Hills finished second behind Lisa Derabin (443.80) of Mira Loma Jurupa Valley.
