Ruling Liberals Lose Seat in Special Election

Canada’s ruling Liberals narrowly lost a parliamentary seat in a special election, but the defeat did not loosen the government’s grip on power.
The right-wing Conservatives won 33% of the vote in the constituency of Perth-Middlesex, while the Liberals won 30%. The Conservatives now have 15 seats in the 301-seat House of Commons, where they are the fourth-largest party. The Liberals under Prime Minister Jean Chretien have 169 seats.
