Influential Muslim Leader Steps Down

Imam W. Deen Mohammed, the spiritual leader who over three decades transformed how American blacks practice Islam, resigned as head of the American Society of Muslims.
Mohammed, 69, said at a Chicago convention that he would continue to represent and guide black Muslims and direct his ministry but would no longer lead the society, the main group representing his movement.
Imam David Shaheed said no timetable had been set for naming a successor. He said the movement’s imams might decide to restructure the society.
