Blue Jays Celebrate With Halladay Win

Roy Halladay thought it was important to beat the New York Yankees in his final start against them.

“We want to leave them with something to think about,” Halladay said after he pitched a four-hitter and tied for the American League lead with his 18th victory to help the host Toronto Blue Jays defeat New York, 8-1, on Monday.

Halladay (18-6) tied a season high with 10 strikeouts for his fifth complete game. He tied Chicago’s Esteban Loaiza for the league lead in victories, and tied New York’s Roger Clemens for the AL lead in strikeouts with 172.

David Wells (12-6), possibly pitching to keep his spot in the Yankee rotation, gave up five runs and nine hits in seven innings.

Texas 7, Kansas City 3 -- Mark Teixeira homered twice and Colby Lewis (7-9) pitched seven solid innings for the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

Ken Harvey homered twice for the Royals, who fell two games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

Cleveland 7, Detroit 4 -- Ben Broussard hit a tiebreaking home run -- his second of the game -- in the eighth inning at Detroit.

Broussard, who had a two-run homer in the fifth, finished with three runs batted in. Jody Gerut had three hits and three RBIs, giving him 25 in 15 games against Detroit.
