From Times Staff Reports
A fund has been established in honor of Newport Beach Fire Capt. Al Schmehl, who died Aug. 27 from complications of job-related cancer.
Donations may be sent to New Harvest Community Church, 4790 Irvine Blvd., Suite 203, Irvine, CA 92620. Schmehl regularly paid the ways of men who couldn’t afford to attend church retreats.
Schmehl, 52, was the longest surviving of three Newport Beach emergency workers stricken with cancer after one of the worst hazardous-materials fires in Southern California history at a metal plant 16 years ago.
