County Ready to Pay Flood Damage Claims

Monterey County is ready to pay $11.6 million to hundreds of people living along the Pajaro River whose homes and property were ruined by a huge flood in 1995.
The agreement with 223 plaintiffs is a fraction of the county’s potential liability in a class-action suit filed by homeowners, businesses and residents over damage caused when the rain-swollen river rose above its banks in March 1995.
The proposed settlement will be heard today by Superior Court Judge Robert O’Farrell.
Some 80 plaintiffs, including several major farm companies, still have claims totaling about $70 million against the county.
