From Times Wire Reports
Prisoners rebelling for better conditions in Kosovo province’s largest jail sought to deter guards with burning mattresses, but the resulting fire killed five inmates and hurt many others, the United Nations said.
The fire erupted when guards tried to enter a Dubrava jail building where 174 inmates, many of them convicted murderers, had barricaded themselves, said Paul Coffey, justice department chief in the U.N.-led administration.
He said that 16 prisoners were in a hospital being treated for burns or smoke inhalation and that one guard was hurt.
