U.S. consumers put 48.4 million phone numbers on the Federal Trade Commission’s “do-not-call” registry to block unwanted telephone solicitations as of Sunday’s initial sign-up deadline.
Six million people signed up in the final 72 hours over the Labor Day weekend before the list was first made available to telemarketers. As of Oct. 1, it will be illegal for companies to call numbers on the list.
Telemarketers may be fined as much as $11,000 for each time they phone a number on the registry.
