Neck Hold Used on Man Who Died, Police Say

A 37-year-old man who died after struggling with police Sunday afternoon had been pepper-sprayed by officers and also placed in a neck hold known as a “carotid control hold,” authorities said.
Jeffery Dale Watts of Montclair was transported to Montclair Doctors Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The altercation occurred after officers received a domestic disturbance call in the 9300 block of Vernon Avenue.
