Phillies Deny Maddux a Place in Record Book

Bobby Abreu had three hits and Chase Utley homered -- all in the first three innings -- as the Philadelphia Phillies denied Greg Maddux his 15th win of the season with an 8-3 victory over the Braves on Thursday night at Atlanta.

“I felt good, probably the best I’ve felt in a month,” Maddux said. “I thought I made some good pitches that I gave up singles on, and I made some bad pitches that I gave up doubles and home runs.”

Maddux (14-11) has won at least 15 games for 15 straight seasons, tied with Cy Young for the longest streak ever.

Montreal 3, Chicago 2 -- Tomo Ohka took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning and Orlando Cabrera hit two doubles and a triple for the Expos in their final game this season at San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Expos finished their 22 games in Hiram Bithorn Stadium with a 13-9 record. Attendance for the game was 12,559. Final attendance for the 22 games was 312,882, an average of 14,222 per game.

Milwaukee 5, Houston 3 -- Ben Sheets once again beat Houston as the Brewers stopped a six-game losing streak at Milwaukee. Sheets defeated the Astros for the sixth straight time.

Colorado 9, St. Louis 4 -- Cardinal starter Sterling Hitchcock gave up four solo home runs in 3 1/3 innings at St. Louis. The Rockies took two of three from St. Louis for only their fourth road series victory in 24 tries all year.

San Diego 5, San Francisco 4 -- Keith Lockhart’s one-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th off Giant closer Tim Worrell scored Brian Giles and Phil Nevin with the winning runs at San Diego.

Cincinnati 3, Pittsburgh 2 -- D’Angelo Jimenez’s three-run homer in the sixth gave the Reds a split of the four-game series at Cincinnati.
