Glendale Gets $6.6 Million in Grants for Jobs, Housing

Glendale has been awarded $6.6 million in federal grants to create jobs, affordable housing and emergency shelter for its homeless, low-income families and people living with HIV/AIDS, officials announced Friday.

Department of Housing and Urban Development officials said the funding signaled the federal agency’s commitment to help communities design their own plans to meet the housing needs of poor individuals and families.

“The funding ... is an investment in Glendale’s future [by] promoting economic development and job growth, increasing the supply of affordable housing and helping our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Richard K. Rainey, HUD regional director.

Glendale will receive $4.08 million in community development block grants to stimulate job growth and business opportunities for lower-income families. Another $2.4 million is earmarked for creating affordable housing and $139,000 for emergency shelter and transitional housing for the homeless and poor.
