A Marine found dead of a gunshot wound to the head was identified Friday as a 20-year-old lance corporal from Minnesota.
The body of Stanislav Tamakhin was released to his family in Minneapolis, said Lt. Leticia Reyes, a public affairs officer for the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.
The investigation was continuing, Reyes said.
Press chief and Gunnery Sgt. Arnold Patterson said investigators didn’t know whether the death had been a suicide or a homicide.
Tamakhin was found Tuesday on a firing range close to where his unit members from the Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines were conducting combat training operations, Patterson said. There was no live-fire training being conducted at the time, he said.
