‘Dirty War’ Figure Held, May Be Sent to France

Former naval Capt. Alfredo Astiz, known as the Blond Angel of Death for his role in the “dirty war” during Argentina’s 1976-83 military dictatorship, was arrested to face possible extradition to France for trial in the killing of two French nuns.
Astiz was convicted in absentia and sentenced to life in prison by French courts in 1990, but the Argentine judge who ordered the arrest said Astiz would be extradited only if he were retried.
