Newport Beach City Councilman Gary Proctor submitted his resignation Wednesday, saying it was the right time to redirect his personal and professional efforts.
The resignation takes effect at the end of the month.
In his letter to Mayor Steve Bromberg, Proctor, a 58-year-old attorney, noted his 20 years of public service in appointed and elected positions, particularly his service on the Orange County Airport Commission, which campaigned for a commercial airport at the former El Toro Marine base.
The council must appoint a successor within 30 days of the vacancy or call a special election. Proctor, who was elected in 2000, represents the west Newport and Newport Heights areas.
