Deputy Premier Cleared of Inciting Violence

An Indian judge cleared Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani of charges that he incited mobs to tear down a historic mosque in 1992. But seven officials linked to the ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party will face trial for the razing.
Advani was in Ayodhya when thousands of Hindus razed the 16th century Babri Mosque there, leading to nationwide riots that killed 2,000 people. Hindu hard-liners say the mosque was built on the site of a Hindu temple; Muslims say there’s no proof of that.
