Re “Great Park Corp. Gets New Bylaws,” Sept. 24:
The Irvine City Council should be applauded for its creation of the Great Park Corp. to manage the park at the former Marine base at El Toro. As approved by the council Tuesday, the structure of this corporation is such that it will provide county residents the accountability and transparency necessary for managing such an important public asset.
The public dialogue regarding the structure of this private entity that will manage over $300 million in public assets has been valuable. In the end, the City Council has created a unique public-private partnership that can serve as a model for others looking for innovative ways to manage public resources.
With its action creating the Great Park Corp. and its recent settlement with Caltrans over concerns about the development plan for the base, the city is poised to annex the base and realize the wishes of the voters as expressed in Measure W.
I look forward to working with Irvine in getting this annexation approved in November and joining the council members in breaking up the runways soon after.
