Danger at Rail Crossings Is Hyped to Detriment of Transit Solutions

Re “Neighbors Fear Deadly Crossings,” Sept. 18:
Thank you for your follow-up concern about the safety of rail crossings in Orange County. Unfortunately, such articles and disproportionate outrage are a prime justification for the Orange County domination of the most hazardous transportation choice: king car.
Every day for years, across boulevards and freeways from Seal Beach to San Clemente, drivers and pedestrians have been pancaked by poor urban and suburban planning.
Attention paid to the oversexed dangers of rail travel and crossings serve only to defeat future rail plans and creativity, not to ensure the statistical safety of Southern California drivers, bikers and pedestrians. Neighbors need to respect such crossings; they take cars off the road.
