Nepalese soldiers killed at least 14 Maoist rebels in scattered fighting, the Defense Ministry said. Troops killed 12 rebels near Chitapokhari village in Khotang district in a gun battle in which one soldier died. The area is about 250 miles east of the capital, Katmandu.
Two more rebels were reportedly killed in clashes with the army in nearby Baseri village. Nearly 200 government troops, rebels and civilians have been killed since the rebels withdrew from a seven-month cease-fire last month and began attacking government and civilian targets.
