Fermin Named CHRB Director

Ingrid Fermin, who became the first female steward in California in 1981, has become the first female executive director of the California Horse Racing Board.

Fermin, 63, was selected by CHRB members. Her appointment was announced by CHRB chairman John Harris at the board’s monthly meeting on Thursday at Hollywood Park. CHRB senior auditor John Reagan and California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Assn. President Daniel Schiffer were the other finalists.

Fermin, who lives in Del Mar, is married, and has three children and four grandchildren, will begin her duties on Jan. 1. A steward on the Southern California circuit for some 13 years, she replaces Roy Wood, who is retiring.

“I will help ensure a level playing field for everyone,” Fermin said in a statement. “Some of this involves the same responsibilities as those of a good steward -- making sure that sanctions are consistent and that everyone is treated fairly and the same.”
