Washington State Held to 29 Points

Washington State went more than nine minutes before scoring its first basket in an 81-29 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma State on Saturday at Stillwater, Okla.

John Lucas III (19) and Joey Graham (18) combined to outscore the Cougars, who had one of the worst offensive outings since the three-point shot started in 1986-87.

Georgia Southern holds the record for fewest points, 21, in a 40-point loss to Coastal Carolina on Jan. 2, 1997.

The 29 points given up by Oklahoma State were the fewest since a 55-29 win against New Mexico State on Dec. 3, 1952.

“I have not run into, in my 40 years, that kind of defensive intensity for as long as they played it,” Cougar Coach Dick Bennett said. “It was most impressive.”

Washington State (3-2) missed its first six shots -- including five three-point attempts. The Cowboys (5-0) built a 29-2 lead and led, 36-10, at halftime. The Cougars finished 12 for 55 from the field, including four for 24 from three-point range.

With the win, Eddie Sutton passed former Western Kentucky coach Ed Diddle for eighth place on the all-time coaching wins list. Sutton, who has a record of 760-292 at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State, is seven wins behind former Oklahoma State coach Henry Iba, for seventh place.

No. 1 Wake Forest 90, Richmond 73 -- The Demon Deacons (6-1) never trailed the Spiders (3-2) at Winston-Salem, N.C., before heading into a nine-day break for final exams.

No. 2 Kansas 81, Pacific 70 -- The Tigers (2-1) stayed close by scoring on six consecutive possessions down the stretch before Aaron Miles made a steal with 1:10 left, helping the Jayhawks win their 11th in a row at home and start 4-0 for the first time since 2000-01.

No. 3 Syracuse 68, Colgate 55 -- Hakim Warrick scored 23 points and the Orange (7-0) used a late 13-1 run at Syracuse to clinch its 39th consecutive victory over the Red Raiders (2-4).

No. 5 Illinois 72, Arkansas 60 -- The Illini (6-0) overcame a sluggish offense and poor free throw shooting (21 for 35) to get past the Razorbacks (5-1) at North Little Rock, Ark.

No. 7 Connecticut 74, Indiana 69 -- The Huskies (3-0) got a lift from reserve freshman guard Antonio Kellogg, who started a 17-1 second-half run with a three-point basket that erased a 13-point deficit at the Hartford Civic Center.

No. 9 North Carolina 91, No. 8 Kentucky 78 -- Rashad McCants scored 28 points and Sean May had 19 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels (6-1) over the Wildcats (4-1) at Chapel Hill, N.C.

No. 10 Duke 93, Valparaiso 61 -- The Blue Devils (5-0) took control midway through the first half at Chicago with a 20-4 run and routed the Crusaders (0-4), giving Coach Mike Krzyzewski his 699th victory.

George Washington 96, No. 11 Michigan State 83 -- After the Spartans (3-2) cut a 15-point deficit to six with 5:27 left, the Colonials (4-1) used a 10-2 run to pull away in the BB&T; Classic at Washington.

No. 12 Maryland 78, George Mason 54 -- The Terrapins (4-1), who limited the Patriots (3-2) to four first-half baskets, will play George Washington today for the BB&T; Classic title.

No. 13 Pittsburgh 87, Duquesne 57 -- The Panthers routed their city rival to start 5-0 for the fifth consecutive season. The Dukes (1-7) have lost six in a row.

No. 17 Louisville 98, Lafayette 57 -- The faster, more talented Cardinals (4-1) took control immediately at Louisville, Ky., opening with a 17-1 run. The Leopards (1-4) missed their first nine shots.

No. 18 Texas 70, Seton Hall 62 -- The Pirates (2-2) opened the second half with a 12-2 run to get to within 40-39 with 13:40 to play at East Rutherford, N.J., but they were never able to catch the Longhorns (5-1).

Miami 72, No. 19 Florida 65 -- Guillermo Diaz scored with 1:30 left at Gainesville to give the Hurricanes (3-2) a six-point lead over the Gators (4-1). Anthony Harris made four free throws in the final minute to clinch the victory.

Michigan 61, No. 20 Notre Dame 60 -- Daniel Horton’s three-point play with 20.7 seconds left at Ann Arbor, Mich., lifted the Wolverines (4-3) over the Fighting Irish (3-1).

No. 22 Alabama 102, Charlotte 101 -- Kennedy Winston made a 16-foot jumper with 20.5 seconds left in the third overtime to give the Crimson Tide (6-1) the victory at Charlotte, N.C. He also forced overtime when he made an 18-footer with 2.9 seconds left to tie the score at 78-78.

No. 23 Iowa 83, North Carolina Greensboro 58 -- The Hawkeyes (6-1) used a 22-5 run to take a 29-point lead in winning the Hawkeye Challenge at Iowa City for the 22nd time in 23 years.

No. 25 Wisconsin 70, Rutgers 62 -- Mike Wilkinson scored 26 points at Piscataway, N.J., to help the Badgers (4-1) improve to 45-1 under Coach Bo Ryan when scoring 70 or more points.

OTHER GAMES

Gonzaga (5-1) outscored Massachusetts, 23-4, in an eight-minute span during the last 9 1/2 minutes at Seattle and beat the Minutemen, 68-57.... Jordan Kent, Coach Ernie Kent’s son, made a three-point basket to cap a 21-8 run and Oregon (4-0) beat Vanderbilt, 75-65, at Portland.
