An explosion at a coal mine in central Kazakhstan killed 23 people and injured three, officials said.
Eighty-seven miners were working at the mine in Shakhtinsk, about 120 miles south of Astana, the capital, when the blast occurred at 3:08 a.m.
The cause of the blast was being investigated by a special commission.
Collapsed rock trapped some of the survivors, making rescue work especially difficult, but the rescue operations were finished, said the deputy regional emergencies agency chief.
