From Times Wire Reports
Pope John Paul II ushered in Christmas by lighting a candle for peace in his window and then celebrating midnight Mass.
A choir sang a Christmas concert in St. Peter’s Square after dusk. In the darkness, a single candle appeared in John Paul’s window. The pontiff raised the candle to make the sign of the cross, and the crowd burst into applause.
Later, at Mass, the 84-year-old pope was guided to the front of the church in his white wheeled throne. He delivered his opening greeting in a clear voice.
