Hughes Electronics Corp.’s DirecTV, the biggest U.S. satellite-television service, said it added 405,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter as it offered local channels in more cities and digital video recorders.
DirecTV added 1.19 million subscribers for the year, ending 2003 with 12.2 million customers. That topped the 1.05 million new customers that El Segundo-based Hughes forecast in October. New subscriptions last quarter and year were the most ever, DirecTV said.
DirecTV is controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
Hughes shares rose 81 cents to $17.01 on the NYSE.
